Our Spring Living Room Tour

Hello friends! I’ve been making some little changes to our living room to freshen and brighten things up for spring. Our living room is where we spend most of our time and also the first room guests see when they come in the front door, so I tend to focus my seasonal decorating energy in here and leave the rest of the house alone.

If you don’t decorate for the seasons, that’s a-okay! I don’t typically do much besides at Christmas time, but I do like to make some small changes by switching out the throw pillows, restyling the shelving and bringing in some new pops of color. The spring weather outside always makes me crave a little decor refresh.

Our front door opens right into the living room and the view above is the first thing you see. My absolute favorite part of this room right now is all of the fun pillows! David has banned more pillows from entering the house, but several new ones accidentally fell into my cart when I was out shopping the other day. These pillows really wanted to come home with me, and who was I to say no?

So I walked out of the store with a pair of aqua pillows, a pair of pink pillows and a couple fun patterned navy pillows. I’ve promised David that I’m retiring a couple of our old ones that aren’t fluffy anymore.

All of the pillows on the couch are from Walmart with the exception of the cool blue and white one in the middle. That’s actually from Amazon! Here are the links to these pillows, from left to right: patterned navy and white (not finding online), pink (not finding it online), blue watercolor, pink, anchors, teal. There’s so many places to find cheap yet stylish throw pillows these days!

Our huge leather couch looks so much more cheery when it’s covered in pretty pillows, don’t you think?

That DIY picture ledge above the couch continues to be a simple way to introduce new colors and seasonal decor into this room.

I found a $5 book of watercolor scrapbook paper at Walmart and used its colorful pages to fill all of these frames for spring. How’s that for affordable art? If you want it to be more affordable, you could easily paint your own cool patterns. But I was feeling lazy, so scrapbook paper did the trick ;).

I incorporated more aqua and even some pink into our living room for spring, and I’m enjoying the added color! I also tried to add extra flowers and greenery, including these (artificial) peonies stuck in a darling aqua canister I found at TJ Maxx.

I’m currently on the hunt for a nice end table for the other side of the couch, but for now the glass table my mom found at a garage sale 15 years ago is still here. I found a cool basket at the thrift store that I spray painted with an aqua chalk paint, then piled in a few magazines and set a plant on top. That was an easy way to bring in some more aqua and even a real plant!

Here’s a view of the living room opposite the couch. I shared our TV stand makeover with you a couple weeks ago, and I still cannot stop staring at it. What a difference a bit of paint can make!

Those new storage boxes have been a lifesaver for containing all of David’s video game stuff! And they also keep things hidden from our curious puppy, Freya.

Love this organizing solution for a tv stand! Organize video games and all of the accessories inside pretty storage boxes. These Pop 'N Store boxes are so cool because they look nice and fold flat when not used. I love how this blogger added bookplate labels to them! That painted TV stand plus the storage boxes made such an improvement!

I moved this little gray bench into the living room at Christmas time and ended up leaving him here for now. It’s a pretty vignette next to the front door.

Now, will you do me a favor? Try to ignore the shiny pine closet door in the photo below. Instead, imagine it as a gorgeous black like the bathroom door makeover I did. I’m determined to give the rest of our interior doors makeovers this year! Just wait until they are all black with pretty trim.

The corner in the below photo hasn’t really changed, but I did switch out the accessories on the shelf. Styling a corner shelf is tough! I’ve gotten much better with practice, though. If you struggle to style shelves, my advice is to rearrange things often and you’ll get better at it with practice. Here’s a blog post with my shelf styling tips.

I really need to find some art for that blank wall above the rocking chair! I also really, really need to get around to painting the rocking chair. That bright pine is starting to look out of place amongst all the grays and blues in here.

Taking photos with a little puppy around is proving challenging! Freya wanted to be a model in every shot. This is where you’ll find her perched most often. That window gives her a clear view of our neighbor’s driveway, who she’s in love because he gives her treats whenever we run into him outside.

I like decorating with trays, and this pretty white one is holding a stack of magazines and this decorating book along with some pretty things.

In case you’re getting bored of our tour, here’s another good one of Freya. Isn’t she the cutest? We adopted her a few months ago and are so in love with having a puppy in the house. Thankfully she doesn’t mess with my decor, for the most part anyway.

If we turn back around to look at the far side of our long and skinny living room, we’ll see our bench and drop zone that sits to the left of the front door. This area needs some decorating attention, mainly because I have yet to find anything I love to hang on the big blank wall above the bench.

I added some greenery and pretty touches to the bookshelf while still keeping it functional. I picked up that cute aqua dish to toss our keys and odds and ends into when we come and go. The rest of the bookshelf will look familiar to you if you’ve been around here long because I haven’t changed much. I mainly brought in a few accessories from other rooms.

And that wraps up our little tour of our spring living room! Like I said, all it takes is swapping out a few of the smaller accessories to really switch up your space without a lot of work or money.

I hope you are having a fabulous spring! The weather is finally warming up here in Iowa (fingers crossed). Freya and I have been going on lots of long walks and soaking in the sunshine!

Next up: Making over our front patio!

Have a lovely day,

I’m feeling pulled to incorporate more photos of family am friends into my decor. It’s so difficult to decide what gets printed, in what size, and what medium (canvas, photo, art print, etc.). Do you create a gallery wall or a few large pieces? Have any tips for making these hard decisions? I’m stuck paralyzed with options not knowing what to do.

    • Tough decisions! I personally prefer prints over canvas just because they are more affordable and can be displayed in different styles of frames if you want to switch things up. I created a huge gallery wall in our last apartment filled with photos, and my process was to first collect the frames and figure out how I wanted them arranged. Once my frames were decided on, I ordered prints of family photos to fit those frame sizes. If you use varying frame sizes like I did, I’d recommend printing a few extras in each size so you can play around with a few options. I also think larger size frames grouped in a row of three down the hall or on a blank wall can look very polished and gives you a place to display a few of your favorite photos.
