I fell in love with the built-ins in our living room before we ever set foot in this house. Simply seeing a photo of them flanking the fireplace had me dreaming of styling them with pretty things! Just think of all the #shelfies!
I took some time last week to restyle them for the spring season and am loving seeing them all prettied up!
Changing up the décor on shelves is such a great way to give a room a fresh look. And you can usually shop your own house for decorative items so it doesn’t have to cost a thing.
When I’m craving a change, I’ll gather up all of the small décor off of tables and shelves throughout the house and pile them in one central place. Then it becomes a fun challenge to create new arrangements using my existing decor. If you never rearrange things on your shelves, you should give it a try!

Decorating Shelves For Spring
Here’s what the shelves look like for spring! I used a lot of white to brighten up all that wood and sprinkled in some blues and pinks for a touch of spring color.
I displayed the two tobacco baskets I found at Gordmans on the mantel. I’m in love with them! That pitcher was bright yellow but I painted it white with chalk paint and stuck some spring flowers from Michaels inside along with the cute little birdie I found at Michaels last spring.
One way to balance shelf decor is by repeating colors on each shelf like I did with all the white. I shared some technical tips for decorating shelves in this blog post including tips for thinking in threes and grouping in triangles.
Most of the items on these shelves are older things I’ve picked up at thrift stores and while shopping over the past few years. Collecting decorative objects in whites, blues and pinks make it easy to mix and match them a lot of different ways when decorating shelves around the house.
I found that blue lantern at a thrift store and always find a place for it in my decor because it’s my favorite!
Baskets are a great way to add texture when decorating shelves. I found this one at the thrift store and loved the shape but the color wasn’t exactly my style so I gave it a quick coat of this chalk spray paint. Worked like a charm!
The other side of our mantel holds the second tobacco basket and pretty flowers from Michaels stuck inside a little vase from IKEA.
Those white storage boxes hold all sorts of electronics gear and video games. You may remember them from when I organized our TV stand in the old house. I still LOVE these foldable boxes and they make great decor!
Our hidden diaper changing station is still working marvelously on this shelf! It’s so convenient to have in the living room and I love how that pretty metal crate from Target holds all of our diapering supplies.
We normally have the changing mat laid out on the shelf and visitors always say they didn’t even notice it until we were over there changing the baby. Read more about our DIY diaper caddy here.
Do you decorate for the changing seasons? I’m not typically a huge seasonal decorator, but I do enjoy decorating shelves to change things up and incorporate some fresh colors for spring.
Hopefully, this post inspires you to make a few changes to your own shelf decor!
Happy decorating,
