Are you like a kid in a candy store when it comes to the washi tape section of the craft store? All the fun colors, patterns and even sparkles just make my heart sing. And for only a couple bucks per roll, I just cannot resist! I find myself picking up pretty washi tape quite often, but I honestly haven’t used it very much.
Those little rolls sure look cute, but what do you actually make with them anyway? It certainly takes a little imagination to dream up ways to use them in crafts. That’s where my blogging friends come in. Today’s your lucky day, because six of us have teamed up to bring your six super simple washi tape ideas. This is the first in our new Creative Ways Series, where we’ll all be dreaming up projects using various craft and decorating supplies throughout the year, and this month is all about washi tape! Now you’ll have some ideas of ways to use some of those colorful washi tape rolls you’ve been hoarding!
Like I said, I’ve struggled to come up with projects that make use of my washi tape stash. So, after a lot of thinking, I decided to keep it simple and make some pretty DIY Valentine cards. A combination of silver sparkles, black and white stripes and metallic red made them especially glamorous, don’t you think?
Feel free to replicate my design and colors or make it your own! Here are the supplies I used:
- Blank greeting cards (you can pick up sets from any craft store or even make your own from cardstock)
- Red metallic cardstock/scrapbook paper
- Black & white striped washi tape
- Silver glitter washi tape
- Scissors
- Double-sided tape
If you’re new to washi tape, it comes in many designs and sizes. It sticks to a surface but is easily removable. If you’ve never shopped for washi tape before, you can find it any craft supply store. Most of my stash is from Walmart and Michael’s.
To make these cards, all I did was add alternating stripes of the washi tape to the front of the card. I think part of the fun of washi tape is that it doesn’t have to be perfect, so I like the ripped edge look. You could also cut your team for straight edges if you wish.
Then cut out a pretty heart from your red paper. If you have a heart stencil or cookie cutter, that would be perfect to trace. I didn’t have either, so I took a sheet of scratch paper and folded it in half to cut out a symmetrical heart. Then I traced it on my red paper and cut it out. I used a couple pieces of double-sided tape to stick the heart on top of the washi tape stripes.
And, voila! I gam DIY Valentine card perfect for mailing to your sweetheart.
