There’s something about the holiday season that turns me into a crafting addict this time of year! I have a couple shoe boxes filled with Christmas/winter crafty items and it seems to be calling my name every day lately. So the other day I decided to use my crafty odds and ends to make some DIY Christmas ornaments, and I’m here to share all five of my handmade ornaments with you today!
With just a few supplies and a free afternoon, you can create all five of these DIY Christmas ornaments yourself! Seriously, the supply list to make all of them is pretty small and even includes some easy-to-find thrift store items that make the cost of these ornaments next to nothing. How do handmade ornaments for pennies sound? Good? Good. Let me show you how!

I made all of these ornaments in one afternoon! And honestly, a large chunk of that was dry time so the actual time spent working is pretty minimal. I got some cleaning done in between coats of paint, but it would be so fun to get a group of girlfriends together to sip spiked cocoa and chat the afternoon away while making some handmade ornaments.
Supplies For All 5 DIY Christmas Ornaments
- DecoArt Maxx Gloss Acrylic Paint in Jungle Leaf, Poblano Pepper and Garnet Stone
- DecoArt Glamour Dust in Ice Crystal
- DecoArt Snow-Tex
- Burnt Out Bulbs From Christmas Lights
- Ball Ornaments (Thrift Store Or Dollar Store)
- Pinecones (Dollar Store, Craft Store or Nature!)
- Foam Balls (Dollar Store or Craft Store)
- Jingle Bells(Dollar Store or Craft Store)
- Assorted Ribbon
- Assorted Paint Brushes
- Scissors
- Hot Glue Gun
DIY Ornament #1 – The Frosty Pinecone
This snow-covered pinecone is adorable, isn’t it?
Use a small foam brush to dab on the DecoArt Snow-Tex. It’s thick, so just dab away and apply heavier “snow” to the top of the pinecone with lighter bits of snow further down.
Three toothpicks stuck in the pinecone will help it stand up while drying! Once dry, paint a coat of DecoArt Glamour Dust over the “snow” to add magical shimmer.
When all of your paint is dry, hot glue ribbon, greenery and string on top.
DIY Ornament #2 – The Shimmery Snowball
I love this mini snowball, especially with its tiny jingle bells on top!
Use a small foam brush to dab DecoArt Snow-Tex all over the foam ball. This stuff adds dimension to your foam so it looks like real snow.
Three toothpicks stuck in the foam will keep it off the table while drying. Once dry, paint a coat of DecoArt Glamour Dust over the “snow”.
Cut a loop of ribbon for your hanger and knot the ends together. Use the tip of a scissors to carve a hole in the foam large enough to set the knot inside. Fill your hole with hot glue and attach the knotted end of the ribbon hanger.
Tie a few jingle bells together and hot glue them onto the ribbon along with a sprig of greenery.
DIY Ornament #3 – The Festive Bulbs
Can you believe I found a whole shoe box of these old light bulbs at the thrift store?! Many were faded, scratched or burnt out so I decided to repurpose them into DIY Christmas ornaments.
Paint a coat of the DecoArt Maxx Gloss over each ornament. I clipped a wooden clothespin onto the bulb base to create a stand so the paint could dry without touching the table. This paint dries smooth and glossy which makes your paint job look very professional!
Once the paint is dry, tie a string around the base of the bulb and knot to create a hanger. Embellish with a small ribbon hot glued to the top.
DIY Ornament #4 – The Merry Minnies
These little ornaments are so sweet and very simple to DIY. I bought these mini ornaments at the dollar store – a dozen of them for $1.00!
Use a small paintbrush to dab dots of DecoArt Maxx Gloss paint all around the ornament. Use a wooden clothespin clipped to the ornament base to keep it off the table while the paint dries.
Once dry, tie a loop of coordinating ribbon and hang on the tree!
DIY Ornament #5 – The Christmas Classic
This is the most basic ornament I made, but it’s beautiful nonetheless. Sometimes all you want are classic ball ornaments, and you can use the DecoArt Maxx Gloss to add a glossy new shine to old thrift store ornaments (see the discolored ones I repainted in the photo below). This paint comes in tons of colors so you could even think out of the box and choose a non-traditional Christmas color for these!
Simply paint a coat of paint on the entire ornament, using a wooden clothespin clipped to the base as a stand while the paint dries.
Once dry, string a thin ribbon through the ornament and hang on your Christmas tree!
And there you have it! Five super easy, super cute and super frugal handmade Christmas ornaments!
Happy crafting!
