It’s been a couple weeks since we moved into our new house and, now that we’re somewhat settled in, I think it’s about time I show you around!
Today’s tour is your chance to take a look around our new house and (hopefully) get a sense of why we fell in love with it. This is going to be a photo-heavy post with photos from the MLS listing along with some photos I took before we moved in. I’ll share an updated tour once we get some more things unpacked, but for now, I really want to give you a sense of the space without all of our belongings in it.
I’ll share some of my thoughts on each room as we go, but we honestly don’t have a lot of immediate decorating plans. One of the biggest lessons I learned in our first house was the importance of living in a space for a while before you start making a lot of big changes and decorating decisions. Plus, with a baby arriving any day now, I’ve known all along I wouldn’t have time to do much decorating right away.
I’m so excited to finally show you around our new house!
Let’s start outside.
The exterior of this house had me from the minute we pulled in the driveway. In fact, we beat our realtor there so I took a picture of the front and texted it to my mom since she shares my love for blues and grays. We toured a lot of other houses that day, but this one stood out to both of us. When I texted my mom that picture, I had no idea we’d end up putting an offer on this very house the next morning!
I’ve always sworn I would never live in a suburb where all the houses look alike, and I’m happy to report that our new neighborhood is full of charm. It’s a newer development (our house was built in 2005) and all the houses are cohesive, but no two are exactly alike.
We were looking for something without any big projects that needed to be done, and we love that the exterior is in such good condition. And the two-car garage is a huge plus after having a one-car detached that we never actually parked in!
The weather is cooling down fast here in Iowa but I’m already dreaming of spending lots of time on our back deck next spring and summer. The deck is in excellent condition – all it needs is some furniture! And of course, I’m excited to string cute lights from that pergola!
There are little garden beds surrounding the deck that I’m looking forward to using next year. There’s also a big patch of rhubarb and mint along the house to the right of the deck. I don’t have much of a green thumb, but we’ll see what kind of gardener I can be next year!
Let’s head inside the front door next…
This cute room greets you when you step inside. I love how much sunlight it gets! This bonus room could serve so many purposes, but my initial plan is to turn it into a welcoming sitting room/study/office. I suspect it will evolve a lot as we figure out how to best utilize the space. There’s also a half bath between this room and the kitchen in the back.
To the left of the front door is the door to our garage and the stairway to the bedrooms.
The back half of the main floor is a great room with our kitchen, a dining area in the middle and the living room. I love all of the open space!
We’d like to paint or stain the cabinets and add hardware at the very least. I’m looking forward to adding some character to this builder grade kitchen over time, but for now it is functional and has plenty of storage space.
Here’s a look at the other side of the room. I’m in love with the fireplace and built-ins! Just imagine all the decorating that can be done on those shelves ;).
Now let’s head upstairs!
This laundry closet is at the top of the stairs, and it sure beats hauling the laundry basket down to the dark corner of the unfinished basement in our last house.
To the left of the laundry room is a bedroom, which will soon be the nursery…
To the right of the laundry room is a full bath…
And to the right of that is another bedroom, which David has adopted as his office. You have to love the cute jungle theme going on in here! Not exactly a manly office, but David claimed it because he wanted a ceiling fan.
And the third bedroom upstairs is the master. There’s more space than I know what to do with!
I’m pretty excited to have a master bath in here, making this three bathrooms which is a huge improvement over the one we had in our last house.
And David’s surprisingly excited about the his and hers closets because he gets his very own closet space without my encroaching on his half.
There’s also a basement just waiting to be refinished! We like that this gives us an opportunity to improve our house value and add more living space down the road. It’s plumbed for a bathroom and has an egress window so we could add a fourth bedroom down here if we want.
And that concludes the tour of our house for today! Once we have this baby and get unpacked a bit more, I’ll definitely share an updated tour with you.
All in all, we love that this house is in great condition and move-in ready. While it has great bones, it’s really a blank slate of builder grade construction that I can’t wait to infuse with some color and personality. There are so many projects swirling around in my mind these days! I can’t wait to share them all with you as time goes on.
Have a great day!
