Nursery Sneak Peek ~ Gray Crib, Breathable Mattress & A Blank Slate

With our move-in date just a couple weeks ahead of our baby’s due date, I was prepared to bring baby home from the hospital with her nursery still packed in boxes. After all, everyone says newborns don’t need much right away anyway.

But after nearly two weeks of settling into our new place and no baby as of yet, I’m happy to report that we’ve started putting together a nursery! I cannot tell you how excited I am to tackle the first room makeover in our new house.

I’m putting the finishing touches on my design plan for the nursery and will share the mood board with you soon (I’m so excited about it!!!), but today I’m giving you a sneak peek at the progress we’ve made in the nursery already this week.

It doesn't take much to transform a room! Check out how pretty this nursery looks now that it's not hideous pastel green anymore. This white nursery is serene, calm and filled with baby necessities like the beautiful gray crib and the Newton Wovenaire crib mattress.

We decided we were moving shortly after finding out we were expecting, and it’s been tough for me to have the patience to hold off on setting up a nursery. For someone who LOVES decorating, having to wait nine months is torture! Knowing we were moving even helped hold me back from buying all of the decor ahead of time – I can’t believe I managed to wait!

We came home from each baby shower and garage sale this summer and immediately packed all the new baby items into boxes labeled “nursery.” Although it was a true exercise in patience to keep it all boxed up, it’s been a treat to unbox everything now that we are finally moved! We’re all set with newborn essentials, a crib, a mattress and tons of adorable outfits!

The Pastel Green Before

This room was painted a pastel green when we moved in. I was prepared to live with it like that for a while, but David–in his sweet efforts to go above and beyond for his pregnant wife with super swollen feet–offered to paint the nursery last weekend.

As of a week ago, here’s how awesomely messy this room looked:

A Blank Slate

Thanks to a few hours of painting, the green walls are now a thing of the past, and we have a beautiful blank slate to work with. It makes me so happy to have a room painted and ready to decorate!

I know white walls aren’t super exciting, but I really wanted a blank slate that could be the backdrop for pops of bright colors. With white walls, off-white carpet and a gray crib, I have tons of freedom to incorporate smaller accessories in pinks, purples, blues, greens, etc.

Since I could go into labor any day now, I doubt this nursery will be “finished” for a while. But for now, my goal is to at least set up the basics.

We started by assembling this beautiful gray crib which was a gift from my parents. Isn’t it pretty?

Then we unboxed our new crib mattress–the Newton Baby Wovenaire Crib Mattress. As a first-time mom, I have been bombarded with choices and selecting a crib mattress was no easy feat! What sold me on Newton’s mattress is that it is 100% breathable, washable and recyclable.

It is free of chemicals and it is specifically designed to allow maximum airflow through the mattress (this is supposed to help baby’s sleep longer and more comfortably, which I certainly hope to be true!).

I suspect we’ll be very thankful that this mattress has a removable cover that can be washed when accidents happen. You can even wash the mattress itself!

Here’s a quick look at the other corner of this room. David and Freya were testing out the recliner. Freya approves and has been lounging in it in the evenings while I unpack and sort through baby things.

Now that the painting is done and the room is cleaned up, I feel like I have a blank slate ready for decorating. I cannot wait to add fun colors and make this a beautiful space for our little girl.

I’m not sure exactly what will all end up in here, but we’re testing out these fun pink curtains and this little blue chest I’ve had for a while. It’s holding baby clothes for now until I find a larger dresser to use as storage that can double as a changing table.

There’s plenty left to do to turn this into the nursery I’ve been planning in my head for these past nine months, but for now, I’m just so happy we have the basics ready to go and a serene room to bring our baby home to. I know she won’t be sleeping in here right away, but it’s still nice to have the basics set up!

Bump Update

Today marks 39 weeks + 2 days! As a huge planner, I’m so anxious not knowing exactly when we’ll get to meet our baby but, as the doctor said yesterday, it could really be any day now! Our bags are packed, the car seat is installed and the nursery is even somewhat set up now. I don’t think we’ll ever be ready and we’re certainly not as prepared as I would ideally be, but I’m sure we’ll survive!

Emily Bump Update

I’ve been blessed with a healthy pregnancy and am feeling great! My only complaints are not sleeping quite as soundly and having super swollen feet these past few weeks.

Maybe I’ll have a baby to introduce you to in the next couple days! I’ll certainly share the news here when I’m able, but I’ll definitely share earlier updates on Instagram if you want to follow me over there.

I hope you enjoyed this sneak peek of our first room makeover in the new house! I’ll be checking back in with my design plan and nursery updates periodically, so stay tuned!
