Goodbye, Pine Cabinets! | Bathroom Progress Report | ORC Week 5

I have been a painting maniac the past few days and am bursting with excitement to show you my progress! This bathroom makeover has been pretty slow going so far, but I feel like I made up for lost time this week. I can’t wait to hear what you think!

As a refresher, I started the One Room Challenge alongside a few hundred other bloggers four weeks ago, and I’ve set out to make over our bathroom in five short weeks. Eeek! That means the final room reveal is one week away! If you need to catch up, you can head back to week one to see the mood board for this room.ORC Guest BlueCheck out this neutral gray bathroom with white board and batten. The biggest improvement of the week is the newly painted cabinets. They were originally a not-so-pretty pine….

And now they are a clean, bright white!

I used my brand new Homeright Finish Max Fine Finish Sprayer to paint the cabinet doors. I’ve never used a paint sprayer before, so I was excited to test it out.

My new friends at Homeright also sent me their spray shelter to try. It is basically a plastic tent that contains overspray when painting. I had no idea how big the tent was until I started setting it up the other day! I could sleep in it! In fact, I can just about stand upright inside it (I’m barely 5′, so that’s not saying a lot ?). I set it up by myself with no instructions or picture of what it was supposed to look like, so I didn’t get the poles quite right. But now that I’ve done it once, it will only take me a couple minutes to set up next time. Here’s the tent in my basement (don’t mind the mess and poor lighting):

The Finish Max applies a light, even coat of paint. The paint is much more even than it would have been if I brushed it on…I tend to do pretty thick coats. With the paint sprayer, it only took a couple minutes to run down to the basement and apply another coat of paint. I waited about two hours in between coats and ended up applying three coats on each side of the cabinet doors. So it did take me a couple days to finish painting the doors, but only a few minutes of actual labor since most of that was dry time in between coats. I’m really happy with how smooth and even the paint turned out. This paint sprayer is going to be so useful for painting furniture and such in the future!

After I painted the cabinets, the finishing touch was to switch out the hardware. I replaced the pulls on all four cabinet doors with these polished chrome bar pulls from D. Lawless Hardware. It’s amazing what a difference a simple change of hardware can do! The old pulls looked pretty cheap and were definitely not our style, so it’s nice to have a higher quality pull with a more modern look.

My favorite part of any room makeover is styling pretty accessories, so I couldn’t resist prettying the room up a bit yesterday afternoon. I hung a simple shelf above the toilet and added a few pretty accessories. The plant is a new purchase from Hobby Lobby but otherwise, I just shopped the house for a few decor items.

I’ve been waiting for the perfect place to hang this pretty framed quote my sister gave me a while back, and was happy to see how nicely it fit on this wall!

I’m also oddly excited about my new soap dispenser. Our old one was rectangular and too big for our tiny little vanity, so it’s nice to finally upgrade to something with a smaller base that fits better. See how it was sitting lopsided on the sink?

I’m really happy with my new ceramic farmhouse soap pump. If I knew how happy a new soap pump would make me, I would have spent the few dollars on it long ago! It’s funny how the smallest things make such a difference.

I’ll be back next week with the final room reveal! Between now and then, I need to paint the main door and closet door and install new towel bars and hooks behind the doors. I’m trying to dream up a cheap way to update our Hollywood light fixture without replacing it, so stay tuned to see what I come up with! And I’ll probably add a pretty window treatment over the mini-blinds. There are several things left to do, but overall I’m feeling great about the room’s progress this week!

Come back next week for the final room reveal! Until then, go visit some of the other bloggers participating in the One Room Challenge. It’s so fun to see everyone’s decorating styles and clever ideas. That reminds me that I need to set aside time later next week to peruse all of the final room reveals–I could spend hours looking at all of them!
