See how I’m organizing craft supplies in a small space and get craft storage ideas you can use in your own home.
Until recently, my large stash of craft supplies has been hiding in basically every nook and cranny of our house. After nearly a year and a half of digging through boxes, running up and down the stairs, and searching through piles of unorganized craft supplies, I was fed up and knew there had to be a better way.
Without a dedicated craft space in this house, I’ve been forced to get creative with craft storage. Today I’m sharing my solution for organizing craft supplies in a small space. Keep reading for all of the details on my organize craft cabinet!

Craft Supply Storage In A Small Space
If you don’t have the luxury of a full craft room, you have to think a little more strategically about where to store all of your glitter, glue, and doodads in small spaces. Think creatively about ways you can make use of wasted space.
I zeroed in on this little wall off of our kitchen. I usually do projects on the kitchen island and our dining room table, so having my supplies nearby is a huge plus. And my desk is also near that little wall right now so it was a logical place to add some storage.
I measured this small wall and hunted down a used cabinet that fit just right. I already shared all about how I gave this small cabinet a complete makeover using chalk paint (see that chalk painted furniture project here).

With the outside of the cabinet looking pretty, all that was left to do was organize the inside.

I organized all of my craft supplies during a couple of nap times recently. As with most organizing projects, all I can say is “why didn’t I do this sooner?”.
I love how pretty and organized this cabinet is and it’s now so easy to find exactly what I need. The clear storage containers from iDesign are so helpful because they stack and I can easily see what’s inside.

Step 1: Gather Everything
Round up all of the craft supplies stashed all over your house. Gather them all in one place so you can see exactly what you have.
Step 2: Sort & Purge
Sort your craft supplies into piles by categories. I started by putting all of my paint in one pile, writing utensils in another, glues and tapes in another, and so on.
Discard anything that’s broken or dried out. Also, start a donation box or bag and fill it with items you aren’t likely to use in the near future and any duplicates of things.
When you’re limited on storage space, it’s important to do a thorough purge! Only keep things you know you will use again soon. Anything else can be tossed or given away. I tried to only keep supplies that I reach for over and over again. I even pared down my craft paint collection to only those colors that I use frequently.
Step 3: Assess
Once everything is sorted into piles and you’ve done a thorough purge, it’s time to assess what you have left and figure out the best way to store it all. Take note of how much storage space you’ll need for each category and how to best store them.
Step 4: Contain
Next up is placing everything into containers. You probably have plenty of containers and bins in your house for this task. But if you want to upgrade to uniform containers that perfectly fit your storage space, I highly recommend these clear acrylic containers from iDesign.
Square or rectangular containers will maximize every square inch of your storage space as opposed to round jars that result in a lot of wasted space. Clear containers make it really easy to find what you need and lids keep things tidy and allow for stacking to make the most of vertical storage space.
Step 5: Label
When you are finished organizing your craft supplies into storage containers, labels are a great finishing touch. They will help you identify what’s inside each container plus they just look pretty!
I labeled my containers using Cricut adhesive vinyl and my Cricut Maker (see exactly how I make DIY vinyl labels here). You can also handwrite labels using a paint pen or print nice labels on this clear label paper.

Step 6: Refine
The final step to any organizing project is to refine the system as you go. Take note of anything that could be improved as you use your craft supplies and don’t be afraid to refine and tweak things to make them even more functional.
Quick Tips For Craft Supply Storage
Here are a few quick tips to consider as you organize your craft supplies:
- Clear bins make it easy to find what you’re looking for.
- Square or rectangle containers will store more than round containers.
- Follow the 1 in, 1 out rule. This means for every new craft item you bring into your home, you have to get rid of something else from your stash
- Only hold onto craft items that you use often. There’s no reason to store all of those other items you used once and will probably never use again.
I’m completely obsessed with my organized craft storage cabinet! Now I can quickly and easily locate everything I need for projects without running all over the house and rummaging through boxes. Taking the time to get organized really does save so much time in the long run!
