Plant Lover Holiday Gift With Cricut Joy

These DIY planters are the perfect plant lover gift! Just add a small house plant and tie on a little leather gift tag for a beautiful gift idea. Here’s the simple Cricut Joy tutorial.

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Cricut. The opinions and text are all mine.

House plants are so popular right now which makes them a universal gift for just about anyone–moms, sisters, coworkers, friends, and even neighbors.

I love to add a bit of DIY flair and personalization to store-bought gifts, and this plant lover gift idea fits the ticket! This can be a budget-friendly gift idea by using tiny succulent planters or fill a larger planter with a beautiful house plant for your mom. These would also be fun to gift with a couple of plant cuttings.

I used my Cricut Joy to add puns to the planters and to personalize little gift tags with the recipient’s name. This project uses basic Cricut materials and only takes a few minutes to make! The small size of the Cricut Joy is perfect for this type of project, and you can also make this if you own one of the larger Cricut machines.

Here’s how I made these beautiful, punny plant lover gifts!

Cricut Joy Vinyl Plant Pot Puns

Supplies

Step 1 – Create your design in Cricut DesignSpace

Write your plant puns in your favorite font and arrange it as desired. I used the “American Typewriter” font for mine.

Then size your design to fit your plant pot and click “make it”.

Step 2 – Load Vinyl Into Your Cricut Joy

Follow the on-screen prompts to load white Smart Vinyl into your Cricut Joy. Smart materials, designed specifically for the Joy, are so simple to use because they don’t require a cutting mat! Just feed the roll of Smart Vinyl directly into your machine and you’re ready to cut.

Step 3 – Cut Your Design

Now let your Cricut Joy do all the work! After it finishes cutting out the design, unload the vinyl from your machine and cut around the outside of your design with scissors.

Step 4 – Weed Your Design

Use your weeding tool to weed the excess vinyl away, leaving the individual letters on the clear backing.

Step 5 – Apply Transfer Tape

Apply transfer tape on top of the design and smooth it down using the scraper tool. Then slowly lift up the transfer tape (the letters should lift up with it).

Step 6 – Apply Your Design To The Plant Pot

Carefully place your design on the plant pot and stick it in place. Smooth it out well with your fingers and/or the scraper tool. Then carefully lift up a corner of the transfer tape and slowly peel it away from the pot.

The letters should remain in place, if any letters start peeling up put the transfer tape back down and smooth everything down really well.

Leather Gift Tags Personalized With Cricut Joy

Supplies

Step 1 – Cut Your Leather Gift Tags

The Cricut Joy doesn’t cut leather but that’s okay because these leather gift tags are just a rectangle! I love the Cricut brand leather for projects, just use sharp scissors to cut it to the size you desire for your tag.

Step 2 – Create your design in Cricut DesignSpace

Design your lettering for the gift tags in Cricut DesignSpace. I used the American Typewriter font for mine but you can use whatever you’d like! I also added a tiny heart shape to the end of the names for a little extra love ;).

This is important: Make sure you mirror your design for iron-on projects!!

When you’re happy with the design, click “Make It”.

Step 3 – Load Vinyl Into Your Cricut Joy

Load your Smart Iron-On into the machine following the on-screen prompts (or load your regular iron-on on a cutting mat, shiny side down).

Step 3 – Cut Your Design

After your design is finished cutting, unload the vinyl and trim the excess vinyl away.

Step 4 – Weed Your Design

Use your weeding tool to weed the excess vinyl away, leaving the individual letters on the clear backing.

Step 5 – Apply Your Design To The Leather Gift Tag

Heat your EasyPress Mini to the medium heat setting. Lightly press the hot EasyPress Mini on the leather for 5 seconds to preheat it.

Then position your iron-on on the leather gift tag (shiny liner on top). Apply medium heat to the iron-on material for 30 seconds, using light pressure and gentle movement the entire time.

Step 6 – Tie On The Gift Tag

I used the tip of my weeding tool to puncture a small hole in the end of the leather tags. Then thread string through the hole, using a needle if needed. Tie around your planters for the cutest gift!

Aren’t these the most adorable gift?! This is just one of the many (and I mean many) DIY gifts and projects you can make with the Cricut Joy.
