It’s been a while since I’ve given you a tour of our dining room so I thought I’d show you around today. I’ve made some updates to this room since you’ve seen it last, plus I’ve picked up a few pretty things to create a simple summer tablescape.

The photos below are from the very first room makeover I did in our house – the dining room! As you can see, that wood paneling was calling for some paint. I was so excited to be out of a rental and into a house of my own, a house where I had the freedom to paint my walls bright blue if I wanted.
After a couple of years living with the blue accent wall, I decided to paint over it. I think accent walls can look marvelous, but this one never felt quite right. There’s really not a logical focal point in this room which is why that wall just never quite worked. I still love that bright blue, but I was craving a change and painted it gray to match the rest of the walls.
The room feels so much calmer now! I love the simplicity of the gray walls and am now wishing I had the time to give that hutch a beautiful makeover.
Our dining room is a place where we enjoy meals and play board games, but it’s more often than not a place where supplies for my home projects pile up. This room has been a mess of tools and things all summer, so it feels amazing to have it clean and functional again!
I wrote a summer message on the giant chalkboard (DIY tutorial here).
I kept the decor very simple for summer, adding color to the room with copper vases filled with sunflowers and setting a blue and white simple summer tablescape.
This beautiful blue and white fringed table runner is from World Market. I love the texture it adds to the room and the simple stripes will transition well with the seasons.
These gorgeous shibori chargers were on sale at Michaels when I was there last – aren’t they pretty?! I love anything blue and the pattern seems effortlessly summery to me.
I paired the chargers with simple white plates from Dollar Tree, and topped them with cloth napkins I found at TJ Maxx last year. There are so many fancy ways to fold napkins but I decided to lay them flat on top of the plate for this simple summer tablescape.
A bit of satin ribbon tied around the silverware and a simple artificial leaf underneath for color is all it took to complete this simple summer tablescape.
I recently painted all of our interior doors to match the ones I did during our bathroom makeover last fall. I just can’t get over how classy the doors look like now! It’s amazing what a bit of wood trim, a coat of black paint and new door knobs can do to a boring pine door.
Our dining room has three doors – one to the kitchen, one to the hall and one to a closet – so replacing the shiny pine with a stunning black had a huge impact. I shared the details of the door makeover in this post.
I hope you enjoyed this little tour of my dining room today! It’s never too late in the summer to create a simple summer tablescape. The sunflowers and blue hues will transition easily into the early days of fall.
Have a lovely day!

Such a pretty table! Love the new wall color and the black doors. I have been thinking about painting our interior doors black for a while now. This may give me the nudge I need! What are you thinking about doing with the hutch?
Thanks, Kaille! I was super nervous to paint our doors black, but I now stare lovingly at them every day ;). They were well worth it! The hutch isn’t in the best of shape and a lot of the wood needs to be patched/repaired. I want to paint the entire thing and maybe stencil a pattern behind the shelves. Just debating what color to do and have a lot of other projects that I want to prioritize first.
