How has a whole week flown by already?! The One Room Challenge speeds by so quickly that I feel like I barely make progress before it’s time to give the weekly update. While I don’t usually post so many real-time updates during projects, I hope this is a realistic peek at how my room makeovers go. Especially makeovers when I barely have any time to work on them 😉 Even a few hours a week adds up!
As a refresher, I started the One Room Challenge alongside a few hundred other bloggers two weeks ago, and I’ve set out to make over our bathroom in five short weeks. Eeek! If you need to catch up, I shared the mood board and design plans in week one and a painting update in week two.
I was provided with free product to complete this room makeover. All opinions are 100% my own. This post contains affiliate links for your convenience. See my disclosure here.
Since I finished painting the ceiling and trim white last week, my first task for this week was to paint the walls gray. I chose Valspar’s Bottlenose Dolphin. It’s a fairly dark gray with a blue tint to it. It looks a bit more blue than what I had envisioned, but I still like it. Blue is my favorite color, after all 😉 Choosing gray paint is so tough!
I’m planning to add a board and batten style finish to the bottom third of the walls, so we hunted the store for a cheap, preferably pre-cut board we could use for the batten. I wasn’t sure what I was looking for but hit the jackpot when I found these 29¢ wood laths. We grabbed an armful for just a couple dollars!
Then came the difficult part – the measuring! Figuring out the spacing for the boards is not my strong suit, but I exercised as much patience as I could muster to make sure they were spaced evenly and level. The level and tape measure were definitely my friends!
Once I had all the boards cut and spaced out, I got to use my new favorite power tool–the Ryobi Airstrike! Seriously, this thing is amazing, and I now want to nail anything and everything together. I’m a power tool novice, so I jumped at the chance to test it out when Ryobi offered to send it to me. It was easy to use and made attaching the boards to the wall a complete breeze. Nailing all of these boards would have taken me a while, but with the Airstrike I had them all attached in the time it took to pop a bag of microwave popcorn. You can’t beat quick tasks like that! (Visit Ryobi Nation for more project ideas and how-tos.)
I’m not finished with this batten project yet but hopefully will be by next week. My next steps are to add horizontal trim along the top of the boards and then I have a lot of caulking and painting to do.
This package arrived on my doorstep last week, and it’s been so hard for me to hold off using it right away! MirrorMate sent me a pre-made frame for our builder grade mirror and I’m itching to install it. I chose the Chelsea Classic White style, which will look very nice against the dark walls.
You can see the style of the frame in the photo below. It’s a little confusing since you’re seeing the shower curtain reflection, but it gives you an idea of what the frame will look like.
I’ll tell you more about this frame once I install it, but so far I can tell you that MirrorMate took all of the guesswork out of ordering. All I had to do was choose the frame style + color and submit some measurements. And it looks super easy to install!
So here’s where the room is at today. This bathroom may be small, but it’s still a challenge due to limited time to work on it plus the need to keep it cleaned up and functional in between work sessions since this is the only bathroom in our house.
I’ll be back with another progress report next Thursday. Until then, go check out the progress all of the other bloggers are making on their rooms. There are so many inspiring projects in the works! I love seeing real-time progress updates from all of the bloggers during the One Room Challenge.

This is looking so great! I love that you are doing board and batten-it is going to give it such a custom look! I’m tackling my bath for ORC too, so I’m loving seeing all of these other bathrooms too-yours is going to be gorgeous 🙂
Thanks so much, Kristin! It’s fun to be working on my bath right alongside so many other bloggers!
OOH! I am LOVING that wall color!! Awesome progress – can’t wait to see the final reveal!
Thank you, Jen! I’m anxious to get the rest of the painting done so I can see it start coming together.
