‘Tis the season to deck out your home in festive holiday decor. I love this time of year because everyone seems to be in the decorating spirit. I know I have been. Once you dig out your Christmas decorations, where do you begin?
I always start by putting up our Christmas tree in our living room. I fluff the branches, string on the lights and dress it up in ornaments and I’m instantly in the holiday decorating spirit. Of everything Christmas, the tree holds the most tradition for me personally. When I was growing up, my mom bought each of us kids one new ornament every year. She would take us shopping and we would admire all of the pretty choices, finally selecting our favorite. We brought them home, wrote our name and the year in black Sharpie on the bottom, and carefully hung our new treasures on the tree.
When I moved out on my own after college, my box of ornaments came with me, ready to decorate my first Christmas tree in my own place.
I am very excited to be participating in the Bringing Christmas Home tour this week. I’ve joined up with a group of blogger friends to bring you an entire week of holiday home tours, room by room. Several shared their festive porches yesterday, and today is the day that many of us are sharing our living room decor.
So, without further adieu, let’s step inside the front door and tour my living room.
We have a little nook of an entry that opens up directly into the living room. Here’s what you see from the front door:
First of all, I have to show off my brand new picture ledge! I’ve had this planned out in my head since we moved in a year ago, and I finally made it happen this week. I built it all on my own, painted it, and then had David help me figure out how to hang it up. I am overly excited to have a place to rotate photos and art as the seasons change.
Oh, and in obligatory room tour fashion, here are two mugs of hot cocoa perfectly perched on the couch. Don’t they look cute? And no, I don’t really serve myself cocoa like this but it sure adds some cozy to the couch in these photos 🙂
Here’s a little peak at the end tables on either side of the couch. Those little gold deer are probably my favorite decoration in the whole room. I found them at Hobby Lobby earlier this fall, and was instantly in love. They’re just so darn cute!
This jade tree was actually a white elephant gift I received last year. It’s perfect for me, because it requires so little watering. I added an ornament to it as a joke, but then decided I liked it. So, naturally I added some more.
I love jingle bells. And this gold bowl. So I put them together and they make me happy 😉
Directly across from the couch is our TV. I added a lot of greenery to our TV stand, along with some gold glitter bows and pine cones. At first I thought it was a bit gaudy, but now I love it. I found these gold bows at the thrift store the other day.
Here’s the side of our living room furthest from the front door. The doorway between the couch and chair leads to the kitchen.
I had a lot of fun wrapping up some presents the other night. I love choosing a couple rolls of wrapping paper each year, and then creating a stack of beautiful gifts. I used a thick black ribbon on them, finishing the gold polka-dot paper off with a bow and the red paper with a sparkly snowflake.
I’ve recently been enjoying creating little vignettes on my cedar chest under these windows on the far side of our living room. I think they’re looking nice and festive.
I love this mini boxwood wreath I made recently. I posted the tutorial here last week if you want to check it out.
I’ve also finally gotten in the groove of styling this corner shelf. It’s really cute, but I’ve had it for three years and can never quite figure out what to put on the little shelves. This is a big improvement from what I used to have on it!
Alrighty, now let’s turn back around and take a look at the side of the room that we walked in. The entryway and front door are right through this doorway. Our little house has cute rounded doorways off of the living room, so I wanted to accentuate them with some decor. I really love how this garland looks around the doorway. However, I really don’t like the pine door. It looks so out of place, especially now that my living room is painting nicely. On my to-do list for 2016 is to paint all of our interior doors a charcoal grey.
Ooh, remember the “Happy Everyday” banner I made earlier this fall? Well, I still love it but felt like it needed to be replaced with a more festive garland for the holidays. So, the other night my friend Ashley helped me create this “Fa La La” banner using some metallic cardstock and my Silhouette.
This small wall is on the other side of the front doorway. It sort of perplexed me when we moved in, but now I treat it like an entryway area. The bench was a wedding gift built by my brother, so I love having it on display. The bookshelf is a functional place to drop our keys, file our mail, and tuck away our hats and gloves.
Thank you for stopping by to tour my living room today. Please feel free to visit anytime!
Stop back tomorrow morning as we continue our tour into the dining room. And don’t forget to visit all of the other Bringing Christmas Home tours happening this week:

Everything looks so fresh and bright!!! I love your tour!
Thank you for visiting!
So pretty! I love how you pulled the blues in! It’s a very HAPPY space!
Thanks so much, Colleen! I’m crazy about every shade of blue.
Great tour! I love that “you are cheerleader for all things creative”! That doesn’t come naturally to me so it’s always fun to me to meet someone who things creatively. Love your house!
Thank you!!!
Emily! I knew you would do some amazing things, but holy cow this living room tour blew me away!!! I love how you are able to make all the red and green blend seamlessly with your blue and gray decor. That picture shelf turned out perfect. Would you please do a blog post on how you went about making it? I think I need one in my office! Also, the gold dots in the frame on the shelf – is that a printable? I would love if you could send it to me. 🙂
My other favorite parts is how you hung your stockings and how you put an ornament on your little tree..and kept going! I think it looks so whimsical, and now I want one of my own!
To sum it up, can you just bring all your awesome decor and skills and decorate my house? Okay, thanks! 🙂
Awww, thank you so much for the kind words. I’m glad you enjoyed the tour. Stay tuned for a shelf tutorial…I had no idea what I was doing, but it was super easy so I know you can make one, too! Most of the artwork is free printable from various blogs. You can find them and more on the Free Printables Pinterest board. The gold dots artwork is actually a piece of scrapbook paper. I have a big book of scrapbook paper in various gold designs that I got from Hobby Lobby earlier this year. Scrapbook paper is great filler for frames!
So cute!! I love all of it! I can’t wait to see how you decorated the rest of your home for Christmas!
Thank you!!! I’m excited to show you around the dining room tomorrow.
